ADVANCE PRAISE FOR New York/Los Angeles
A great accomplishment. And a genius idea!!! The comparison of the two cities is killer. I was particularly taken with New York City. The difference is astonishing. Of course I live in L.A., but I fell in love with NYC. Dynamic. I was amazed how startling the images are. How provocative. To have put the two separate but together visually is unique. Congratulations. – Diane Keaton, Actor, Director, Author
Lloyd Ziff’s high-flying bicoastal career—as a cutting-edge LA album-cover designer in the Seventies and big-deal NY magazine art director in the Eighties—was energized by these twin lodestars of American pop culture. All the while he was also taking photos for his own pleasure, and they might eclipse what he did in his day jobs. Ziff’s coolly observed but uncannily perceptive images capture the zeitgeist of both cities at peak moments of creative ferment, and once seen they are hard to forget.
– Martin Filler, author and critic
“Lloyd and I go back over forty years, and his photographs, like Lloyd, are kind of shy. They seem to focus ultimately on the infinite, the horizon line. I own at least two of Lloyd’s pictures, and I keep them with me, usually by a window because the photographs themselves are picture windows; they view a life of romance, escape and optimism. They give me a way out. I love Lloyd for most of the same reasons.” – Annie Leibovitz, Photographer
“Lloyd Ziff’s work has a Proustian quality recording how life is and was, at a particular time. His gentle humanity will not permit his ego to come in between him and his subject. For my generation there is a nostalgia with black and white photography as there is with black and white film, it has the veracity of ‘breaking news’, the truth. Remarkably this veracity is not diminished by Lloyd’s move into colour. His images can have the illusion of a snapshot yet this immediacy conceals a formidably visual talent. Like the tightrope walker who makes something difficult seem easy, Lloyd’s photographs have a simple directness.” – Allen Jones RA, Artist

“Brilliant!!!! Honestly, it is the best photography I have seen in a long, long time. I am knocked out. Both volumes take my breath away. And, how well they work together: West Coast/East Coast, left and right, red and blue, black and white. This is an incredible body of work, perfectly presented.” – Gail Buckland, Author, Educator, Curator of Photography
“These pictures are about seeing clearly and about the relief and comfort that photographs can summon up, after the color and the clamor of commerce is let behind.” – Marvin Heiferman, Photography, Curator, Author
“Ziff ranges freely. Unconfined by time or subject, he randomly enriches our idea of what the city represents.” – Sir Harold Evans, Journalist, Writer, Editor
“Lloyd’s photographs hone in on the sometimes-subtle, oft-times overt wonders of everyday California West Coast locales. His landscapes of sand, surf, and the setting sun register in each frame a sense of peace and quiet isolation.” – Paul Ruscha, Photographer

THE ESSAY: Hidden in plain sight
I GREW UP IN L.A., AND LIVED THERE UNTIL I was 20 to go to the Pratt Institute in New York. The light in L.A. is so lovely. The irony of it, the architecture—the city is like a fantasyland for me. There’s always a horizon line in the distance, with a foreground and middle ground. The city embodies a sense of space, which is the opposite of New York, where everything is right in front of you, and the light, though also great, is much harsher.
I began to shoot in my last semester at Pratt , where I was going to art school. My roommate recommended an extra-credit photography course because he thought I’d be good at it. My early pictures of New York from ’68, fi lled with black-and-white patt erns, really got me hooked. Though I was an art…

Two Cities, One Lens
During his career in magazines, including Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, and Travel + Leisure, art director Lloyd Ziff worked with acclaimed photographers Annie Leibovitz, Richard Avedon, and Irving Penn. Their work filled Ziff’s pages, and over the years Ziff shared his personal photography with them. It’s those images, starting with a shot of a Buick on Brooklyn’s Myrtle Avenue the L.A. native took while a student at Pratt Institute, that now comprise Ziff’s new book, New York/Los Angeles ($125; KMW Studio; kmwstudio.com), a double volume of photos taken in his two hometowns.
