Two Cities, One Lens
During his career in magazines, including Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, and Travel + Leisure, art director Lloyd Ziff worked with acclaimed photographers Annie Leibovitz, Richard Avedon, and Irving Penn. Their work filled Ziff’s pages, and over the years Ziff shared his personal photography with them.

One of the most unusual Detroit-themed photo books available this holiday season is yet another guide to Detroit, but featuring a mythological mascot: Le Nain Rouge.
It’s written and photographed by Dave Krieger, who says he began the project as a reaction to the “ruin porn” of the last decade. Instead of that, Krieger wanted to create an upbeat book about the intact beauties of the city.
“I’m trying to get people to think about Detroit differently,” Krieger says.
That’s where the Nain Rouge concept came in: an anarchic avatar to unite the book, and a persona to adopt for the little Nain notes sprinkled throughout the book, in which the red guy shares his views.
“He is finally revealing himself to offer up his perspective about what is cool about Detroit,” Krieger says. “He gets a little salty about the people who seem to be pompous and arrogant. He’s got a positive mindset. He never takes credit for his contributions but is always blamed as the consummate outsider.”

There is a new Detroit guide book now available for purchase, Things I Do In Detroit: A Guide Book To The Coolest Places By The Nain Rouge. This isn’t your run of the mill guide book. This one is from the perspective of our very own red gnome.
Obviously, the book really isn’t written by the Nain Rouge, but I can suspend my belief for a while. Dave Krieger is the author and photographer of the book. A native Detroiter, Krieger has been a well-known photographer for more than 30 years.
Each location includes a brief synopsis by Krieger, and the Nain’s own take. The photos are where the book shines. There is something fun and cheeky about a smiling Nain Rouge holding a tennis racket at the Indian Village Tennis Club or him serving Saganaki in Greek Town.

Many have called it Fire Island’s Stonewall—after the 1969 protests in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village that kicked off the gay rights movement.
Forty years ago, a restaurant in the Pines—a beach community on Fire Island, New York—refused to serve Teri Warren, who was dressed in drag. When Warren’s friends from the neighboring community of Cherry Grove, a longtime summer haven for artists and theatre people drawn by its openly gay atmosphere, heard what had happened, they were outraged. On July 4, 1976, they fought back by dressing in drag en masse and storming the Pines in revelry. The “Invasion of the Pines” turned into an annual celebration.
Photographer Susan Kravitz ’65 first visited Cherry Grove in 1979 as a straight woman and returned for more than 30 years, photographing the Invasion and the community at large during a pivotal era in American culture when LGBTQ life became more accepted into the mainstream. During this time, Kravitz also came to terms with her own sexuality. Her first book, Mascara, Mirth, & Mayhem: Independence Day on Fire Island, documents these cultural and personal transitions through her photographs.
